To Do:

Go above and beyond

Give the love you wish to receive

Create things you wished you had in a time when you felt stuck.

Give someone the confidence to live their dreams.

Life is better when we strive for greatness.

Wake up in the morning on a mission. How will I impact others today? And most importantly how will I impact my own life?

Learn something new.

Take time to just be.

Take time to enjoy your morning coffee.

Make time to be silly and laugh about stupid stuff.

You create your day and your life.

If you were to replay scenes from your life, what do you want them to look like? What will your life be full of?

Finding Deeper Meaning

Like many who come into college, I started my academic career by taking “generals”. These are classes like sociology 1001, biology 1000, and intro to psychology.

In these courses, we skim the various topics that pertain to the overall subjects- like in biology we briefly went over definitions of evolution, genetics, and cell functions. Each topic covered spanned about two weeks long. We took an exam, forgot about what we learned, and then moved onto the next subject.

While these classes gave us a chance to explore the wide range of studies available to us, they lacked an in-depth understanding of why the lessons were meaningful and didn’t give us the ability to have long conversations about what we had learned.

It’s not until 3000-level subjects when we are able to completely unpack and learn deeply a certain aspect of an overarching subject. We take more time focusing on each lesson and usually have one big project that we work on the entire semester.

What does this have to do with deeper meaning?

Have you ever gone to a social gathering and realized you are engaging in surface level conversations with people?

These conversations sound like tape recordings “how are you?” “how’s work?” “what’s new?”

After a while, these conversations drain our energy. Why is that?

We crave connection and meaning.

Social gatherings honestly suck until you get into those unique conversations that you don’t engage with in your everyday life. They excite us and make us feel like we are really getting to know the person we are talking with.

These conversations usually occur once we get more comfortable and situated in an environment.

If you are like me, you want to give everyone attention at an event. You want to say hi to everyone, but sometimes engaging with just a few people allows for more memorable conversations plus once you have a really good conversation it makes it easier to engage in more.

Not only do I enjoy depth in social settings, but I find when I work on just one or two projects during the day, I feel much more satisfied. Focusing on finishing a book or an art project instead of doing small bits of everything is much more rewarding. Trying to pack too much in our day makes for a chaotic life.

So what I’m really trying to say is that engaging with more in-depth content is so much more interesting and fulfilling. When my day has at least one deep interaction or lesson, I feel peaceful and whole. When my days are full of lots of superficial content, I feel like something is missing. In some ways, this deeper meaning is achieved by simplicity. Less can be more.

What do you think?

Why You Need to Move in Order to Grow

I know- the title is kind of a bold statement.

I believe in it fully.

Here’s why-

Have you ever been back in a place where people only see you as the old you?

The people in this certain place expect old reactions from you and see you in a way that is no longer a present version of who you are. Often times you feel as though you have to resort to old behaviors to satisfy the relationship even though you know you’ve grown from this stage in your life.

No matter how differently you act or what topics you are now interested in, they choose to see you as the person you used to be.

You need to move.

I’m sure you’ve heard this before but you can’t move forward if you keep re-reading the same chapter of a book.

There is no way you can grow in a place that refuses to see you as a book that’s still being written instead of a chapter that is to be re-read.

If someone isn’t willing to see you for the growing version of yourself, they’re only stopping you from reaching that next step in your life.

What do I mean by “moving”?

I think you can move in a number of ways. It all depends on what kind of “move” you think is necessary in order for you to grow and be who you truly are. Here are a few examples-

Live somewhere new

Actually move to a new place! Pick a location on the map and go there. Start completely new. A new house, new job, a new climate.

Sounds kind of drastic, right?

I want to tell you a story. I had a friend who traveled and lived in Europe for a year to work. While there, we would FaceTime occasionally and she told me how distance from our hometown made her feel like a new person. She had new visions for her future, felt she had new purpose, and saw life through a whole new lens. I could see it too. She even explained to me how she felt as though the people in our hometown were stuck having the same conversations that she didn’t want to be a part of anymore. When her job ended and she came back home, she went back to old perspectives and behaviors. She knew better but because of the environment she was put back in, it was hard to change and continue growing there.

So please just move!

If not physically moving your location you can also

– move away from certain types of people

– move jobs

– move away from certain places that don’t benefit you anymore

It can be hard to do these things especially when it’s all you know, but you are not doing any of these people or places any favors by pretending to fit in there.

Move where you need to move.

Don’t Give Up

I know it’s hard

but don’t give up.

Some days taste like success-

others feel like pure failure

don’t give up.

you’ve climbed halfway up the mountain

but you’ve slipped down a couple of rocks

don’t give up.

Don’t throw away the table because it is dirty,

clean it.

Take care of your dreams,

they’re fragile-

don’t give up.

Look down,

you’ve come so far,

would you give away a year of growth

because of a few days of failure.

I hope not.

Get up.

Be proud of who you are

and what you will accomplish tomorrow.

You were made to do great things.

What Do You Choose To Believe?

IMG_5019

How do you connect and see the experiences in your life?

What is your role in your life story?

How did you get to where you are today?

Your answers to these questions are what you have chosen to believe.

How crazy is it that you can go through the same experience as someone else, yet neither of you will ever describe it in the same way?

Your life is your perception of it.

What is your story and how are you going to tell it?

How you view your past is telling of how your future will be. Do you feel that your past life experiences have been unfair? You will likely continue to feel this way about future experiences as well. You need to change your beliefs to change what you experience.

Did you know that there are millions of contradicting beliefs out there?

Which ones will you choose to believe?

The ideas that empower you or the ones that fit your pitty story?

Do you want to live guided by your hopes or fears?

Choose your beliefs wisely and have a happy day 🙂

Own It

IMG_1606

There are so many things that I used to keep to myself because I was what? Afraid.

My whole school career was wasted saying nothing because I was afraid of sounding dumb. I never pursued my ideas because of fear of being judged. What is that? Sad.

I have friends who tell me excitedly about pursuing a dream. I get excited for them! We talk a few weeks later, and I ask about their pursuit. What do I hear? Every reason why it can’t happen. Why?

We let doubt and fear consume our minds. Ever share your goals with someone and they tell you every reason why it can’t happen for you? You let someone else’s fear and doubt consume your mind too! Just like that.

These thoughts sound something like-

“This industry is already oversaturated, I won’t make it.”

“It’s more work than I had thought. I just can’t”

“I don’t have enough money or resources”

etc. etc. etc.  etc.

My a**.

Here’s my advice: OWN IT.

Who are you? Own It.

What do you love? Own it.

What are your dreams? Own them.

Easier said then done right? Here’s something I want you to think about. What do you have to lose? Yourself- if you don’t own it.

Putting “Own It” into your daily practice is a conscious daily choice. For me, it has been joining groups that I was afraid of joining, asking the questions I used to be scared to ask, sharing ideas that have the potential to be rejected. Scary!!!! Omg. I have a mini heart attack almost every day.

But, you know what? The more doors you knock on, the more doors that will be opened for you. This is exactly what has been happening for me. So very worth it.

What does that mean?

No guts, no glory. You have to dare to be true to you and do what you know you need to do. Yes, you will be afraid- do it anyways.

Live your dream. No one got to where they wanted to be by being comfortable.

I saw a quote today that said “nothing changes without change”

So, what if you fail? Own it.

What if it doesn’t turn out how you wanted it to? Own it.

But what if it does?

I hope this post inspired you. Just Own It!!! (haha omg I feel like this sounds like a nike commercial.. well) Thanks for reading.

What’s Really Holding You Back?

“We suffer more in imagination than in reality”

Why do we let fear control our experiences when 99.9% of the things we worry about never end up happening?!

Can you imagine how different your life would be if your thoughts weren’t constantly  self-defeating?

While fear can be beneficial to us in some cases, like keeping us away from dangerous situations, it can also be damaging by preventing us from growing and living a peaceful life. Think about all of the opportunities you’ve missed by letting fear take over.

I think that the most inspiring people I’ve met seem to be fearless. They aren’t afraid to speak up, take risks, and can talk to virtually anybody confidently. How did they get to be this way?

Being curious, I listened to a podcast with a series of interviews about becoming fearless. One of interviewees, in the podcast, described how he got over one of his biggest fears- swimming. By the end of 3 months, he had not only learned how to swim, but ended up swimming two miles in the ocean. He describes how he felt in this moment: invincible. Not only did he conquer his fears, he mastered them. He explains how this experience led him to the realization that he had the capability to achieve much more than he had thought and that he had been letting fear limit his whole life.

At the end of the podcast, another interviewee revealed one of his strategies to overcoming his daily fears. He calls it fear-setting. His strategy has three parts:

Define, Prevent, Repair.

He said that writing out your fears is key to putting them to rest. So, he has a journal where he divides his pages into define, prevent, and repair columns.

In the first column, he defines his fear. For example: “I won’t do well on my presentation next week”.

In the second, he writes what he can do to prevent this from happening like “I will practice 10 times this week”.

In the third column, he writes how he can repair the situation if the bad things happens anyways: “I will realize that I’m not perfect and there is room for growth”.

If you wan’t to learn more about the insights from this practice, look up Tim Ferriss. I believe he also has a Ted Talk that you can watch on the topic!
