3 Things You Need to Ask Yourself Before Starting A Fitness Journey

I posted this quote on my Finding Motivation a Tuesday post, but it is too relevant not to say (or write) again:

“Change the approach but never the goal”

How many new year’s resolutions have you written that are almost identical to the ones you wrote the year before?

How many times have you said “I’ll start when ___” or my personal favorite “diet starts tomorrow”?

I have done and said every single one of these.

This post is not to say that I am the expert on fitness, but it is to point out the three questions that need to be answered before you decide how you will approach your fitness goals. Once you take these three questions into consideration – it will make sustaining your new healthy habits that much easier.

Let’s get started:

  1. The first question: “Do I know myself?”

It’s a deep one. I know. Why do I say this? Let me give an example. I like to go to a lot of social events. So, what makes a social gathering an event? Food. And it’s usually not the healthiest.  Knowing this, I used to tell myself that I would eat before I got to an event so that when I got there I wouldn’t eat. That never happened. What ended up happening was I would eat before an event and would still eat when I got there. Every time. It made me realize- for me, eating is a very social activity. If I don’t eat at an event, I feel like I’m insulting the host and am not fully partaking in the experience of the event. Realizing this about myself now, I wait until I arrive at an event to eat. As small of a change as this sounds, it has made a huge difference.

Another example- I have tried several different “diets”- paleo, vegan, gluten-free, eliminating processed foods.. the list goes on. These lifestyles may work perfectly for others! I am not discouraging these ways of eating. I wish I was able to sustain them. However, knowing myself, I know that I will I follow these diets rigidly for a few weeks or months, only to binge on everything I was restricting myself from shortly afterwards.

What I am trying to say is what works for others may not work for you. Know yourself. What can you realistically commit to? Do research and decide whether you’ll feel fulfilled or not with certain eating or exercise habits in the long run. There are healthy habits that are tailored to your lifestyle. Find meaning and purpose in your daily routines, and do it in a way where you feel healthy and most importantly HAPPY!

     2. The second question: “What are my priorities?”

Make a list. Rank them.

Example: 1- School, 2- Working out, 3- Hanging out with friends, etc.

Ranking your priorities helps you organize your day. So, if this was my priorities list, I would make sure I got all of my school work done and then the next on my list would be working out. Only if I got all of these done would I hang out with friends. Visualizing what your priorities are everyday will make a difference in keeping track of your daily habits. If it helps, put your priorities list somewhere that you will see them often. This way you will be constantly reminded of what they are.

3. The third question: “Am I actually committed to this?”

Or is this another “diet starts tomorrow” kind of fitness plan?

Find real meaning that will keep you committed to your plan. If your motivation to get in-shape is based on a temporary feeling, then your drive will also be temporary. What is the real reason you want to get in shape?

Write your purpose. Print pictures. Make plans.

You can do this!


How I was Tricked into Eating Vegan

I become vegan (not by choice) whenever I go to California.

Don’t believe me?

August 28th-my first day in California: I flew into LAX and was craving a burger!! My friend and I decided to walk around until we found it.. FAT BURGER. With my mouth watering, we darted into Fat Burger. As I was looking through the menu, I noticed “The Impossible Burger”. I thought to myself: challenge accepted.

“I’ll get the Impossible Burger!” I shouted

to which my vegan friend replied, “I’m proud. Look at you ordering vegan!”

So the Impossible Burger came- and it was actually delicious! Maybe it was because I was borderline starving, but I can’t deny that it hit the spot.

The impossible burger tastes *almost* like a real burger. Honestly, if my friend hadn’t told me it was a vegan patty, I would’ve thought it was a bit of an odd burger, but I still would’ve eaten it. The texture is super soft and a little crumbly. The taste is very similar to beef, but different. I can’t describe it. You have to try it yourself.

For a vegan burger I would rate 10/10– I would definitely order again.

Finding Motivation on a Tuesday


I don’t know why, but I feel like Tuesdays are always the hardest. Mondays are tough, but there’s something about a Tuesday. It’s usually the day that it hits me that, yes, it is the week and there’s all this work to be done!

Here’s a list of my favorite quotes and habits that boost my mood and keep me inspired on a Tuesday:

I really believe that reading one quote in the morning that gives you energy or a push to get your day going is a good habit to form. I have several quotes saved in my camera roll (found on pinterest) that I look at in the morning, and if those don’t seem to motivate me on that given day I look for new ones.

Aside from reading inspiring quotes daily, I have developed a couple of new habits that have changed my quality of life significantly. You should definitely give them a try. Here’s how they have impacted me.

The first: Have more time in the morning for you.

There is no better feeling than waking up at the first alarm. This is definitely a hard task- I know- I used to be best friends with the snooze button. Now? instead of going back to bed, I sit on a chair and just breathe and think about the kind of morning and day I want to have. I don’t force myself to be productive right away, but instead allow myself to organize my thoughts. Once I feel like I’m ready to get some activity in I do some stretching and start the rest of my morning routine. It sounds so simple.. but it makes a huge difference. Those 5-10 minutes where I am totally undistracted and focused on myself change my entire outlook on the day. My attitude has changed and I am more at peace.

The second: Use Your Free-time Differently.

You might think “I don’t have free time”. The free time I’m talking about is the times in-between for example: the times during your commute, meal times, and if you’re a nerd like me the time you sit there waiting for class to start. So how do I use it? Learning. I used to feel insecure that I didn’t know anything outside of what I learned from class. I decided I would change that. How? I recently started listening to podcasts during commutes, reading before class starts, and now scroll through the news during meal times. I’m a very curious person and I am always eager to learn and if you’re someone like me or even if you’re not I think listening to podcasts and keeping your mind stimulated makes for a better day. For one, as humans we crave to be fed knowledge and so it makes you feel some kind of fulfillment and secondly, it can make for good conversation with your peers or coworkers.

I never took the time to learn about her and just assumed there was too much hype around her name..so wrong. Why These 4 Hairstyles of Mine are my Favorite

Am I the only one who changes my hair to signify a new chapter in my life? I don’t think I can count how many “new chapters” I’ve had but based on how many hairstyles I’ve had throughout the years.. I would say a lot- some that worked more than others. Here are a few of my favorite styles:


This purple gave me life! So a little back story: I got my first job at a hair salon. You can imagine how flattered I was at 15 when one of the stylists asked me to model her work. I was convinced after getting this hairstyle that it was just the beginning of my modeling career! While this didn’t turn out to be true.. My hair picture ended up being printed as a poster and was hung at the front of the salon.


Love this blonde so much! My sophmore year of college one of my close friends from high school started cosmetology school right next to my University’s campus. This is the first time she did my hair and I was in love. I decided here that I wanted to stay blonde forever.


A few months after being a blondie, I decided it was time for a change. I wanted dark in my hair but wasn’t ready for a full transition. The change in hair color was actually a huge shock- it turned out much darker than i had expected, but i fell in love with the dimension and honestly I miss this hair.


Had to go back to blonde. I love this style because even though you can see that my hair was a little grown out (it was dyed full blonde before), I received the most compliments on my hair when it was like this. And who doesn’t like a compliment from time to time? Especially on your hair!







What I learned in Two Weeks of Being Social Media-Free

First off I want to start out by saying I used to eat, sleep, breathe social media. My day would start and end by rotating through instagram, snapchat, facebook, twitter then back to instagram again. Any chance I had I was checking notifications or thinking of what to post next.

It never occured to me how much time I spent online. I feel like anyone who has social media can agree that once you start scrolling hours can go by and still you can still be endlessly entertained. Hours spent looking at memes to food posts, to cute animals and people and celebrity creeping.

One day I was out with a girlfriend and we asked this guy to follow us on instagram. Before we followed ourselves he warned us, “I don’t really use social media. “As I went to follow him back, I saw that he had like 5 posts. Thinking of how little time he probably spent online along with my father telling me that I should just get rid of social media all together I began thinking maybe I should give it a try.

A few weeks later, I called an old friend because I was having a horrible week. As I was talking to her, I remembered that she had deleted all of her social media a year ago due to a terrible break up. After hearing about her quality of life since deleting, I decided then and there it was time.

So what have I realized in two-weeks?

1. I was addicted to clicking on the apps

This might sound weird.. but hear me out. For a few days after deleting the apps I found myself subconsciously opening my phone and scrolling back and forth through my apps looking to click the apps. It wasn’t an intentional “I’m going to go on snapchat”. I was just addicted to clicking the apps and checking them without even realizing it!

2. People spend so much time scrolling through their feed

I began to notice my friends and people around me at restaurants, airports, cars, and stores mindlessly scrolling. Heads bowed while being consumed in this world called social media. I saw people flipping through apps with out realizing that people around them were trying to talk to them. I noticed my friends moods changing after seeing something on social media that upset them or made them feel jealous.

3. I am so much more in the moment

Yes, my conversations are so much better with others now. I am present! My mind feels clear not having to think about what everyone else is posting or who’s liking my pictures. ANDDD I have so much more freedom and did I mention time? quality of sleep?

4. It’s fun being mysterious

I don’t feel like I have to post my every move. I don’t care if others see if I’m having fun because I am and I’m the only person who can judge what that looks like. unnamed-1

Okay.. so confession time Lol

I re-downloaded instagram a couple of times during this social media-free thing. Once to check my messages (after like 3 days) and the other time to post a picture (on day 15).

When I was Checking messages I didn’t feel as guilty as when I posted. After posting I felt the old anxiety of constantly checking to see who and how many people liked my picture and realized I was back in this social media world rather than eating the food and enjoying the conversation with my friend (we were at a restaurant), so I deleted the post right away and felt a million times better.

If you haven’t tried going social media-free before I definitely suggest it even if you feel like you don’t use it often anyways. (I still have the accounts, but I  just don’t have the apps downloaded on my phone.) It can be hard at times especially if your friends use social media a lot (like mine) but it is definitely worth it!
